Kevin Cooley

Kevin Cooley is a photographer and video artist known for capturing haunting nocturnal landscapes that explore civilization's relationship to nature. The globetrotting artist has photographed eerie nighttime scenes around the world, from Brooklyn street corners to the icy waters of the Arctic territory of Spitsbergen. Cooley often evokes survivalist fantasies by using signal flares to illuminate desolate, dark places—in the process creating nightscapes that are steeped in the Romantic tradition of the Sublime, an aesthetic philosophy that regarded nature as immensely beautiful and terrifying. He has had solo shows at the Swiss Institute, White Columns Gallery, and Momenta Art in New York and at Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles. His photographs are in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum.
