Klas Eriksson

Encompassing social practice, performance, video, photo, and sculpture, the work of Klas Eriksson engages public spaces and the people that inhabit them to defy the given and to direct focus onto something more unknown and uncertain. Profoundly influenced by his participation in football game culture as a child, the artist is interested in the relationships between contemporary art and subculture in the sense that they both challenge certain conventions. “I want to experience a new public space and how participants and the passer-by react when the given perception is altered and a new latitude is created,” says the artist in his statement. Looking towards artists like William Turner, Yves Klein, Rachel Whiteread, Judy Chicago, and Christo, Eriksson contributes to a legacy of participatory art that derives its meaning from the chasm that is created by artistic intervention.

Ericsson has exhibited his work at Galleri Konstepidemin in Gothenburg, Sweden, Prosjekstrum Normanns in Stavanger, Norway, Christian Larsen Gallery in Stockholm, Eduardo Secci Contemporary in Florence, Bucharest Biennale 5, Royal Art Academy of Stockholm, and many others. He is the recipient of multiple grants from the Swedish Art Council as well as numerous other grants and awards.
