Kwesi Abbensetts

Guyanese photographer Kwesi Abbensetts's work explores the presentation of race and identity in the photographic medium. Interested in the ways that technology gives individuals the ability to control how they are perceived, Abbensetts employs layering and fragmentation to allude to notions of masking. He refers to his practice as "revisionary self-appropriation," exploring one's inherent heritage and lineage without directly addressing any contemporary influences.

Abbensetts studied film at Montgomery College in Maryland before delving into photography, which he learned primarily through experimentation with a Pentax camera. His work has been exhibited in group shows at C24 Gallery in New York; the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute in New York; and Brilliant Champions Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. He lives and works in Brooklyn.
