As American consumers, daily life is inundated with advertisements and buying is an act of self expression. We have become fluent in the language of stylized visual content and easily decode a company’s graphic choices to inform consumption. Advertisers opt to use idealized images, and as a result the idealized version has become standard. Google searches yield perfect or extraordinary examples. Lodewijck Kuijpers collages images sourced from advertising campaigns and the internet, abstracting them from their original purpose to better understand how they wield their power. By repeating the compositions he makes in a various mediums—digital image file, print, beach towel, and painting—he encourages viewers to interact with the objects and continue the chain of abstraction.
