Margaret Inga Urías creates modern-day vanitas that are part photography, part installation, and part sculpture, confounding categorization and blurring the distinction between the historical, symbolic, and emotional. Often photographing constructed tableaux that incorporate both found objects and aspects of the natural world, she emphasizes the ephemeral and the fragile. As the artist has stated, her works document “environments overtaken by impossible or strange accidents” and that she is “primarily concerned with themes of obsolescence—narratives of transience, transformation, and loss.” Urías’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout New York and in 2011 she was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Artists Books.
