Myriam Holme

The paintings of Myriam Holme arise from an exploration of unusual materials and substrate processes. Employing aluminum sheeting, treated with various stains and lacquers, she tests the different possibilities that her materials and tools offer. At the same time, Holme’s pieces go beyond the surface and conquer space, moving between the traditional genres of painting, sculpture and installation, using them as equivalent forms of expression. Complex processes such as absorption, layering, repelling, seeping, and substrate reactions of painting materials shape her images. The artist’s interest centers on texture, materiality and above all the specific, purely optical phenomena the chemical interactions are able to give rise to. Each piece is a briefly frozen moment, torn from a complex work process, like the result of an alchemistic experiment.

Holme has presented her work in exhibitions in Germany and abroad, including Bernhard Knaus Fine Art, Frankfurt, Wilhelm Hack Museum, Ludwigshafen, Kunstverein Ravensburg, Art Forum Berlin, Berlin, Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany, Musée d´Art Contemporain, Bordeaux, France, ArtHaus, Los Angeles, and Project Space 176, London. She has held several guest professorships at art universities, most recently at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
