Nomusa Makhubu

Nomusa Makhubu received a BFA and an MA in art history from Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. Her work investigates the construction of identity and the historical objectification and oppression of African bodies by colonial interlopers. She has created a large body of work utilizing anthropological photographs originally made for use in pseudo - scientific enterprises such as physiognomy. By projecting these images digitally onto her own body, she provokes a tension between contemporary and historical notions of otherness and representation.
