Oliver Arms

Oliver Arms's paintings are the result of a distinct, laborious process involving both creation and destruction. Building and removing layers of oil paint by sanding and repainting, Arms sculpts his work during countless sessions over the course of several months, resulting in canvases that are embedded with various layers and textures. Though they bear the obvious influence of the gestural, all-over compositions of Abstract Expressionism, Arms's paintings are not personal expressions of the artist's subjectivity, but calculated, process-based works that communicate the residual traces of his actions, conveying a sense of an overwhelming bombardment of abstract information.
