Artist Sandy Litchfield currently lives in Amherst, Massachusetts where she is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Massachusetts. Mary M. Tinti, Curator of the Fitchburg Art Museum, says of her work, “Litchfield finds inspiration in a variety of visual sources: art historical paintings, real and fictive pictorial maps, descriptions of mythological cities, and personal photos from her hikes through local landscapes or travels across the globe. She extracts details from these original images and through techniques of cutting, collaging, illustrating, scanning, and ultimately painting – she compiles entirely new wholes from once disparate parts. Throughout the process, Litchfield plays with unexpected perspectives, toys with scale, and amplifies unsung moments with her saturated and intoxicating, color-rich palette. The final paintings, born from painstaking studies, are uniquely Litchfield’s and somehow both of this world and not.”

Litchfield’s work has been exhibited in numerous museums including the DeCordova Museum, The Portland Art Museum, The Hunterdon Museum, and The Fitchburg Art Museum. She is a recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship and the Puffin Foundation Artists Grant Award. She’s had solo exhibitions at galleries in Boston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Manhattan. Her work has been selected for review by The Brooklyn Rail, New American Paintings and The Boston Globe.
