Sean Kennedy

Sean Kennedy creates aerial sculptures and flat works that shed light upon the discrepancies between the vertical and horizontal viewing plane, and the ways in which physical disorientation mutates the viewing experience. Common objects such as cleaning products, cardboard lighters, and Twinkees, among many other things, rest upon acrylic glass platforms suspended from the ceiling. Summoning images of Pop art’s transformative perspective, Kennedy sacrifices his viewer to his will and demands a democracy of items beyond the glass. A traditional space of rest is activated and animated as Kennedy challenges the “translation from object to image and material to information.” Kennedy has exhibited at institutions including deCordova Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts, and Kunstverein Wilhelmshohe Ettlingen, Germany, among a number of galleries in California, Europe, and New York.
