Simon Dybbroe Møller's artistic practice is eclectic, embracing cultural artifacts borrowed from art history, literature, and popular music. These he transforms into his own sculptures, performances, films, and installations. Across his projects, two opposing impulses are at work: a desire to systematize objects, words, and images, and an equally felt urge to wittily deconstruct and undermine the logic of understandable objects.
For instance, Untitled, Uncovered and Incomplete by Chance (in Bloom) (2005) consists of a vinyl recording of a Nirvana’s song “In Bloom” played on a guitar detuned in accordance to Strindberg’s instructions for random tuning–the record sleeve housed in an imitation Sol LeWitt open cube. What emerges is a work that balances sense and nonsense, wit and sobriety.
He has had solo exhibitions at Kunstverein Hannover, Frankfurter Kunstverein, Aarhus Kunstbygning and University of Michigan Museum of Art, among others. His work has been included in the Turin Triennial and the Momentum Biennial in Moss Norway and in group exhibitions at the Detroit’s MOCA, Kunst Werke in Berlin, CCA Wattis in San Francisco, Museum Ludwig in Cologne, The Barbican in London, GAM in Turin, The National Gallery in Copenhagen and Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
