Stephen Willats

Working in a variety of media, artist Stephen Willats operates with the understanding that reality is a construct, and considers his work a reflection of this philosophy. Interested in the socially engaging capacities of art, Willats creates works that activate interaction between people. Inspired by cybernetics and communication theory, Willats has utilized architecture, photography, and abstraction to explore how the meaning of art functions and shifts in society.

Solo exhibitions include Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, Whitechapel Gallery in London, Modern Art Oxford, Passerelle Centre d’Art in France, Institute of Visual Culture in Cambridge, and Tate Gallery in Liverpool. Willats has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions, and is also the publisher and editor of Control Magazine, which has been documenting the work of artists since 1965.
