American fashion photographer Steven Meisel is known for his striking and controversial images that have graced the covers of major fashion magazines and campaigns for the last twenty years. Following a childhood obsession with fashion illustration and glamorous models such as Twiggy and Veruschka, Meisel began his career as an illustrator at Halston. After working with Women’s Wear Daily as an illustrator, Meisel eventually moved on to photography, forging connections that would eventually launch his career at both US and Italian Vogue.
Meisel is credited with the “discovery” of a number of influential supermodels, makeup artists and designers, including Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, François Nars, Laura Mercier, and Ross Van Der Heide. He shot the cover images for several of Madonna’s early albums including Like a Virgin, and in 1992 he photographed the pop star for her controversial book Sex.
Meisel has photographed every cover of Italian Vogue since 1988 and every Prada campaign since 2004. His work has been featured prominently in Vogue, and W magazines and his campaign clients include Versace, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and Calvin Klein.
