Thomas Arndt

Minneapolis born, documentary photographer Tom Arndt captures subtle, empathetic portraits of everyday people. Lonely bars, street corners, rodeos and show windows make up the landscape of his black and white images, which are taken on the street in moments of fleeting chance. While Arndt shot primarily in Minneapolis/St. Paul and Chicago, where he lived for seventeen years, he has also produced series in cities worldwide including New York, New Orleans, Berlin, London, San Francisco and Mexico.

His photographs have been exhibited at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and other venues. In 995 he published his first book of photographs, Men in America, which corresponded with a solo exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
