Tom Gallant

British artist Tom Gallant takes folk tales, literature, and Japanese Ukiyo-e prints as inspiration for his painstakingly crafted paper works. According to Gallant, his practice examines the abusive or absent male in our historical and contemporary visual cultures. His intricate paper roses and floral arrangements, for example, at first look pleasant, but upon second glance, they reveal themselves as cut-outs from pornographic publications. Gallant also explores collector culture through iconography such as etymological collections of moths, gothic rose windows, and Victorian wallpaper. The artist has said he seeks to illuminate “the private made public” through his delicately realized works.

Gallant was born in 1975; he lives and works in London. Gallant holds a BA in graphic design and an MA in fine art printmaking.
