William Leavitt

In the work of William Leavitt, the private space of domestic interiors can seem strikingly ordinary but also quietly unnatural, as if it exists partly in the past and partly in the future. When a houseplant takes on an air of science fiction, we know that the unruliness of a Great Outdoors has come to infect the safety of a Great Indoors. Quickly, recognizable images lose their familiarity and dip into dysfunction.

Leavitt participated in Take it or Leave It: Institution, Image, Ideology, at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 2014. Among his solo presentations are Sidereal Time, Zurich, Greene Naftali, New York, Margo Leavin Gallery, Los Angeles, and Theater Objects, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
