Hannah Starkey

Hannah Starkey is a contemporary British photographer best known for her images of women in staged settings. She has said of her own photographs that they are “explorations of everyday experiences and observations of inner city life from a female perspective,” and Starkey imparts a narrative quality to the individuals within her images. The women featured in them are actresses and anonymous strangers whom she asks to pose, often set against reflections and strategically illuminated. Born in 1971 in Belfast, Ireland, Starkey went on to study photography at Napier University in Edinburgh and received her MA in photography from the Royal College of Art in London in 1997. Starkey’s works can be found in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, and the Seattle Art Museum, among others. She lives and works in London, England.
