John Copeland

John Copeland is part of a new wave of Neo-Expressionists who are reviving figurative painting in the twenty-first century. Embodying the crude, highly gestural style of so-called “bad painting,” his characters are abstracted through swipes and drips of thick paint. Often based on porn images found in magazines from the 1960s, such as Playboy and Easy Riders, the eroticism of his nude female subjects is underscored by the raw, carnal energy of his brushwork.

He has had solo exhibitions at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, Juice Gallery in San Francisco, and Marabini Gallery in Bologna. His work has been included in group exhibitions at The Hole in New York, Galerie Lange + Pult in Zurich, and ARCO (with Reflex Gallery) in Madrid, among others.
