Judith Gilbert's photos in color and in black-and-white explore the details, urgencies and subtleties of the urban cityscape and city life. Her photographic portraits depart from convention and present the subjects in authentic yet often unusual situations. Her work in mixed media, collages, sculptures and installations are vibrant and humorous and informed by found objects from daily urban life, often infused with references to antiquity or icons of modern culture. Judith Gilbert's art and photography have been the subject of solo exhibitions at private, governmental and commercial venues around Munich, and have been met with critical acclaim in the German press.
Judith Gilbert was born into a show business family in New York. Her formal training in the visual arts and photography began in the theater, as an assistant to Broadway scenic and lighting designers. After her university studies of art and German, she became an editor of art and photography books and magazines as well as exhibition catalogues for various publishers in Munich. Her editorial focus increasingly turned to layout, graphic design and pictorial language.
