Libby Johnson
Libby Johnson’s spectacular photorealistic paintings depict fleeting moments of beauty and fantasy in places near and far away. Conveying mood with seductive immediacy, her technical mastery of oil paint and varnish create elaborate complexities of light and shadow. Culled from a range of locations -- from the Louisiana skyline to the Italian countryside -- her lush compositions are invented through a process of layering photographs of cloud formations, treetops and open fields. Her still life paintings of monumental flowers and fruit resting upon textured fabrics coalesce into compositions that are at once tumultuous and harmonious. Although realistic by definition, her works offer a perspective beyond daily life and into the the phenomenal contrasts of our environment.
Libby Johnson lives and works in Baton Rouge and received her BFA and MFA from Louisiana State University. In addition to participating in group and solo exhibitions for many years, her teaching legacy spans from Louisiana to Tennessee to Colorado. Her work is featured in numerous public and private collections such as New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans; City National Bank, Baton Rouge; Louisiana State University Museum, Baton Rouge; Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, Baton Rouge; Oschner Hospital Foundation, New Orleans; …
