Rose Hartman
Since the late 1970s, photographer Rose Hartman has been documenting stylish women at exhibition openings, soirees, clubs, and on the streets. She has captured intimate shots of glamorous celebrities such as Jerry Hall, Bethann Hardison, Margaux Hemingway, and Nan Kempner partying at New York’s infamous nightclub Studio 54. At a time before press was widely invited behind-the-scenes at runway shows, she managed to take candid photos of fashion icons like Anna Wintour, Vivienne Westwood, Naomi Campbell, Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, and Diane von Furstenberg. In addition to high fashion and New York society, Hartman also photographed unknown “fashionistas” on the street and at underground nightspots like downtown New York’s Mudd Club. No matter who she photographed Hartman captured not just clothes the women were wearing, but how they expressed their style. For example, her famous portrait of Bianca Jagger at her 30th birthday party reveals the excess and fun had at Studio 54, as the model sits astride a white horse wearing Manolo Blahnik heels, surrounded by balloons.
