Sadie Laska disguises common materials–umbrella findings, childrens toys, carpeting, and striped furniture–as a traditional canvas, developing pieces which are positioned between painting and sculpture. Laska’s gestural abstraction promotes a humorous and playful aura that is encouraged through graphic color choices and universally recognizable symbols. Reminiscent of childlike chaos, Laska adopts and appropriates familiar deconstructed compositions while implementing her strong understanding of color theory and line weight. By layering aggressive gestures against soft washes and fine linework, hidden figures become personal coded messages.
Laska’s work has been exhibited in solo shows at Office Baroque in Brussels, 56 Henry in New York, Galerie Bernard Ceysson in Luxembourg, CANADA in New york, and Galerie Bernard Ceysson in Paris. She has also contributed to several group shows at galleries and institutions including Romeo in New York, Galerie Bernard Ceysson in Paris, Shrine Projects in New York, and United Artists, Ltc. in Marfa, Texas.
