Sebastian Vallejo

Sebastian Vallejo’s work builds on a tradition of artists using found fabrics as their canvas support—the Fabric Paintings by Albert Oehlen one clear precedent. Sebastian takes fabrics that reflect his Puerto Rican heritage—brightly colored, almost garish or kitsch, floral patterns. He then paints over them using his hands. Vallejo is very aware of the art historical baggage of his gestural approach—the use of the artist's hand is inescapably linked the Abstract Expressionist painters of the 1950s.

Vallejo has exhibited his brightly colored works at a number of spaces both in his native Puerto Rico and the United States, including solo and group shows at The Active Space Gallery, New York, METRO: plataformaorganizada, San Juan, PR, Lloyd Dobler Gallery, Chicago, Cuervas Tilleard, New York, and Lehmann Maupin Gallery, New York.
