Tony Swain

Using the images and graphics found on sheets of newspaper to provide the starting point for his paintings and collages, such elements are ultimately incorporated, adapted or obliterated by their inclusion in Swain’s imagined landscapes and abstracts. Working on both large and intimate scale, Swain unearths and reconstructs the imagery and textual content to create complex otherworldly representations.

Swain was one of the artists representing Scotland in the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007. Born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland; he lives and works in Glasgow, UK.
