About The Work
The darkly playful oeuvre of Japanese artist Atsushi Kaga is populated by a variety of colorful anthropomorphized characters, including leaf-less trees, a wide-eyed bunny rabbit and a depressive cat creature. Using a combination of text and surreal reference, like the pink skull of Michael Jackson, Kaga depicts the dream-like narratives of his characters and their interactions with the real and imagined world around them. In this hand-colored lithograph Sachiko, a 38 year old woman is depicted engaging in a series of everyday and extraordinary activities, all stemming from her double life as an elevator operator by day and a “Queen,” or dominatrix, by night.
