About The Work

Charlie Roberts’ figurative drawings are inspired by everyday life, often beautiful young women in various activities–painting, playing tennis, skating with a gigantic ghetto-blaster. At the same time they lead your thoughts to Matisse’s dancers–Roberts’ recognisable female figures are rendered with soft curves in bright colours on a pattern or monochrome background. His wide-ranging practice also encompasses sculptures roughly carved from chunks of local trees and painted. Stacking his female nudes into a totem pole, the artist creates an object that sits somewhere between tribal object, folk art, and pop cultural figure.
