The young female figure on a bike is rendered in fast, cross-contour swaths of oil, whose thickness and illusion of form belies the fact that there is no skin or body - just the textures of hair and clothing, and the body of the paint. The immediacy of the drawing pushes against traditional associations of slowly built up oil, but retains its richness. There is a feeling of excess and an element of risk in its making that plays with the subject matter. The body language of the figure may be read as being oblivious to the gaze of the viewer or consciously refusing to engage them. Eleanor Aldrich understands the figures as an avatar for herself and the complicated face she presents to the world as a female; at times seeking attention and denying it, sometimes vulnerable, sometimes powerful.
