In his exhibition Cirrus, Marcus Gundling deals with the duplication of pictorial realities and medial shifts, which, however, always materialize in his works as a painted unity.

The artist reacts to the spectacle of omnipresent circulation and distribution of images by collecting images found on the Internet, filtering them in long processes, modifying them, reducing them and finally translating them into painting and drawing. In many stages of the process, the representation and content of photographic reproduction merge with the painterly medium, its material and its own dynamics. Rectangular shapes, diagonal rasters, haptic folds and diffused shadows in cyan and magenta become abstract compositions. Intangible simulacra creates two-dimensional paintings with physical reality and apparent spatiality.

Some of Gundling's works shift postponed paint channels to figurative movements, others contain superimposed materials and processes. Still others blur the boundaries between picture motif, passe-partout or Plexiglas and frame. Layers over layers, spaces and subjective memories, abstraction and figuration superimpose each other.

Due to the interferences and associations, the motifs and depictions become independent, which, like the cloud phenomenon Cirrus described in the melodic title of the exhibition, are difficult to grasp. Contrary to the ephemeral appearance of nature, fleeting memories or accelerated pictorial worlds – here in the hermetic space of the image carrier - the many picture slides and fragmentary traces of the archetype are condensed with painterly and material blurring. In these indefinable depths, painting visualizes and uses its self-reflective means – the images get to the bottom of their own entity.

Marcus Gundling (born 1976 in Würzburg) lives and works in Frankfurt am Main. He studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach with Prof. Heiner Blum. Cirrus is the artist's sixth solo exhibition in the Galerie Parisa Kind.
