Gazelli Art House presents Giovanni Ozzola’s solo exhibition ‘Contando Estrellas’ [Counting Stars] a retrospective exhibition of photographic works by the multidisciplinary artist. Ozzola poetically weaves together twenty years’ of his practice in an installation format alongside an exclusive film and window project. As Gazelli Art House celebrates its London gallery’s tenth year anniversary the exhibition serves to commemorate the long- standing relationship between the artist and the gallery.

The exhibition comprises lightboxes featuring curated dark room slides from 1998 - 2008 selected by Ozzola from his archives. The theme of light and darkness is accentuated by the 25x35cm backlit glass boxes which intermittently flash on and off like the stars suggested in the title of the show. Recurrently referenced throughout Ozzola’s oeuvre, the motif of light and darkness is expanded upon through the traditional photographic method used to create the displayed slides. Their analogue nature eradicates any filtered or reconstructed interpretations of the specific moments in which the photos were captured, presenting an authentic moment in the history. What you see is what you get.

Ozzola has also created a special edition Window Project in conjunction with the ‘Contando Estrellas’ exhibition. The windows on the facade of the gallery will be wrapped with a vinyl photograph of one of the artist’s signature sunset deserted bunker series. Ozzola’s enclosed spaces are skull-like, with holes in the walls becoming eyes looking out onto the horizon. The derelict structures which pepper the Ozzola’s Tenerifian landscape provide a canvas for Ozzola’s opus which explores the conflict of light and darkness, dialogues on society’s racism depicted with graffiti messages and the contrast between interior and exterior spaces.

A film, Addio, 2021, which will premiere for the exhibition, captures key themes presented by Ozzola over the course of his career.
