Channel to Channel is pleased to present Hot Cheetos: Activism and Junk Food, featuring the works of three Nashville based artists, Nuveen Barwari, Courtney Adair Johnson, and Marlos E’van. Opening reception will be Saturday, August 1st from 6-9pm. 

Barwari, E’van, and Johnson first came together in 2018 and again in 2019, working together with youth on a summer program with McGruder Social Practice Artist Residency (M-SPAR). There are many parallels in their methods and personal histories, as each artist was raised in the southern United States, but with different heritages and backgrounds that play an important part in their independent art practices. Their interest in social justice, historical narratives, and the use of re-purposed material have interlaced them into a working collective. 

Nuveen Barwari is a Kurdish American multidisciplinary artist. Barwari’s art focuses on sparking social commentary about migration, the struggles of refugee resettlement, transnational negotiations of self, and the Kurdish cause. 

Marlos E’van is an international artist and Film Producer & Director who apotheosizes global fast food & commercial culture around the world. Simultaneously they deliver critiques on the criminal justice system both in America & abroad while offering works and exhibitions that ask questions of how we, as a society, can break the chains that oppress us & finally live in a world as a unified people. 

Courtney Adair Johnson is an artist and curator based in Nashville, TN. Her art practice works to create sustainable community through reuse awareness. She is interested in creating new ideas with art to generate awareness of our waste and consumption habits. Courtney has led reuse projects with Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Tennessee Craft and Springboard for the Arts (Fergus Falls). She is presently Gallery Director of Tennessee State University Art Department and Co-Builder of McGruder Social Practice Artist Residency (M-SPAR). 

Hot Cheetos: Junk Food and Activism will be up from August 1-Sept 5. The gallery will be open Wednesday-Saturday 10-6pm.
