In practice both Curwood and Devito are engrossed in sculptural mischief, satirical prodding, and witty commentary. Jumping between different modes of making, Curwood engages in optical illusion, spatial misrepresentation, and mind trickery while delivering a highly crafted object - constructing work based on inside jokes with predecessors such as Nauman, Judd, Flavin, and Duchamp, all the while forging his own road. Through a humorous collaging of objects, materials, and stories, Devito creates non-linear, narrative-based physical works and performances involved in issues attendant to the body, random occurrences, and improvisation. For this particular exhibition, Curwood presents i Object, a multilayered, playful body of work where objects are self-activated and assert their own right to interface in the arena. Investigating the process of metal working in Jazz Rollercoaster, La Bonheur, Devito has created a large-scale trak engineered specifically for the blueprint of the gallery, interspersed with sculptural objects that act as representations, models, or sketches for a future, unwritten performance.
