    About The Work

With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social (and art-world) issues including consumerism, media consumption, the cult of the artist and AIDS.

Despite the irony and playful Queer subversiveness that characterizes most of their work, their creations addressing AIDS are both the most iconic and tragic works as two of the members of GI, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal died of AIDS in 1994. General Idea appropriated Robert Indiana's "LOVE" in 1987. While the hijacked image appeared in a variety of guises, including painting, prints and public art, these stamps are rich in meaning, as they best exemplify General Idea's concept of "Image Virus".
