Spending months of work on a single image, James Sheehan orients his paintings towards a monumental transfixation—seeking a physical experience with content. For this work, the image is pulled from a scene in Robert Altman’s film Vincent and Theo which re-constructs Vincent Van Gogh’s funeral. From Altman’s carefully researched scene, with suspect detail and narration, Sheehan vies to gain back a solitary image—tempermental, rough and active—as an ode to a painter continually and perversely memorialized.
