    About The Work

In 2017, SculptureCenter presented Los Angeles-based artist Kelly Akashi's first solo institutional exhibition, Long Exposure. Continuing her exploration of time, ephemerality and the indexical potential of sculptural objects, Akashi has created a series of cast bronze sculptures of her own hand each melded with a round tabletop surface. Each unique cast, produced within days of each other, is built up through layers of wax that end with an impression of the circular mold container, acting as a record of the process itself. Once cast, these bronze objects become an archive of momentary gestures on a mortal timeline. Investigating notions of functionality and display, Akashi asks the viewer to consider the multivalent potential of these objects, which can be shown in an isolated fashion (on the wall, upside down on a surface, or at an angle) or as a support or pedestal for other objects.
