Wangechi Mutu in her Brooklyn studio

One of the most celebrated African artists of her generation, the Nairobi-Born collagist Wangechi Mutu has won widespread acclaim for her fantasmagorical portraits of women enacting mysterious, myth-infused scenarios. Today, many of these portraits—composed of a delirious mixture of clippings from Vogue and other magazines together with the artist's own marks—are on view at the Brooklyn Museum as part of her captivating survey "Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey."

To learn more about her work, and to discuss the way that art helps to build communities, Artspace chairman Christopher Vroom visited the artist's Brooklyn studio for the following videos as part of U.S. Trust 's "Heritage Meets Innovation" series.
