Merlin James

Painter Merlin James explores representations of space, typically depicting interiors or landscapes void of human presence. The artist often plays with basic geometry, building complex architectural renderings out of simple shapes areas of color. In addition to his work as a painter, James is also a writer, and the influence of his art-historical and critical writings is also seen in his visual art, as he considers the formal and compositional properties of the medium and interrogates its history. James's work has been exhibited worldwide, at institutions including the Whitechapel Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, Vitamin Arte Contemporanea in Turin, and the 2007 Venice Biennale.
