xavierlaboulbenne, Berlin opened its doors to the public in 2012 and is located in a former metal factory painstakingly renovated.
The gallery presents a program of international artists that juxtaposed historical figures, such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Steve McQueen or Jose Maria Sert, with an upcoming generation of artists often based in Berlin but of international origins and defining the zeitgeist of the German metropolis.
The series of one-person exhibitions we have presented place an emphasis on process, the ways in which ideas and experiences are transformed into images, performance, and objects. Despite the architectonic sensibility of these presentations, the intrinsic formal quality of the artworks has been a determinant factor for our selection.
Prior to opening a commercial gallery space, Xavier LaBoulbenne was acting as independent curator in Berlin with monumental projects in unfamiliar locations such as Charles Atlas/Leigh Bowery in Ostgut, 2001; Michel Verjux, sbahnbogen Holtzmakstrasse and Sammlung Hoffmann, 2003; Christian Boltanksi in Pfeffferberg, 2007; Marcel Odenbach in Schinkel Pavilion, 2008. In 1995, Xavier LaBoulbenne opened one of the first gallery spaces in Chelsea New York, presenting artists such as Charles Atlas, Ellen Cantor, David Hammons, Mona Hatoum, Marilyn Minter, Lovett/Codagnone, Carl Ostendarp or Rosemarie Trockel.
