Philippe Van Snick

Frequently merging painting and sculpture, Philippe Van Snick creates work that explores space and the viewer's physical relationship to art. Defined by the bounds of his minimalist visual vocabulary, the works are marked by dualism, exploring the tension between dark and light. In the installation Dag/Nacht (1986) two panels, one black and one blue, are paired with matching wooden and glass columns in a narrow space, forcing the audience to directly confront night and day, even as they must carefully navigate through the space. Van Snick has exhibited his work at the 48th Venice Biennale and at numerous institutions, including the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Centre National d'art Contemporain de Grenoble, and Museum Leuven.
