    About The Work

This limited-edition artist book was produced on the occasion of Rafael Domenech's 2020 exhibition Bad Infinities: laboratory of fragments at the Yeh Art Gallery, St. John's University. It features essays by Margot Norton, Associate Curator at the New Museum, New York, and Owen Duffy, Director of the Yeh Art Gallery.

    About the exhibition

Born in Havana, Cuba, Domenech explores how the exhibition space can become a flexible platform for production, a display mechanism, and an experimental publication. His art engages with the technological and economic networks that connect the world, the production of commodities and waste, and their relationship to the city. He carefully considers the transformational capacity of materials: old lighting fixtures, discarded boxes, and trash can be revived into works of art. Domenech’s work engages with the production of architecture and the manufacturing of language. Across the gallery’s drop ceiling, Domenech laser-cut the words “the city beyond the city” into tiles taken from a decommissioned high school in Yonkers. The grid works as an arrangement device for this language, demonstrating Domenech’s interest in concrete poetry. For the artist, these artistic transmutations are responses to the overarching structures — laws, bureaucracies, architectures — that dictate life.

This limited-edition artist book becomes, for Domenech, the exhibition's final work of art.
