About The Work
Deliberately ambiguous, Tracey Moffatt’s photographs explore the universal themes of identity, family, race and sexuality. Creating staged tableaus, often in a journalistic style, Moffatt’s work is emotionally intense, drawing out personal and cultural tensions between characters. In this image from her acclaimed 1994 series, Scarred for Life, Moffatt stages an exchange of humiliation between brothers, featuring the text, “His brother said, ‘crooked nose and no chin—you’ll have to survive on charm alone.’” The series, which features nine works all made to appear as vintage pages from Life magazine, are photolithographs in muted colors—each “documenting” a moment of physical, emotional or psychological childhood trauma.
