The multimedia work of Brazilian artist Valdirlei Dias Nunes navigates the space between geometric abstraction and figuration, using found and created objects, forms, lines and shapes to create a dialogue between all parts of his compositions. Combining painting, sculpture and drawing Nunes’ work evokes the geometric style of artists such as Aluísio Carvão and Willys de Castro. Expanding the dimensionality of each element, Nunes utilizes both two and three-dimensional lines to redefine the canvas space. Minimal and spare, Nunes’ pieces push the boundaries of genre, rendering the iconic shapes and structures of modern architecture and Minimalism outside the parameters of the blank canvas.

Valdirlei Dias Nunes has consistently shown in solo exhibitions across Brazil and internationally for over fourteen years, including Project Room, New York, Casa Triângulo, São Paulo, Brazil, Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo, and Pulitzer Art Gallery, Amsterdam. Group exhibitions include Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo, Brazil, and Museu de Arte Contemporânea, Curitiba, Brazil.
