About The Work

Samar Hussein, 2003-2009 is a series of photographs of Hibiscus flowers that are meant to commemorate the civilian deaths in Iraq since the outbreak of war in March, 2003. Samar Hussein is the name of the thirteen-year-old girl who was the first recorded civilian death in Iraq, and the print depicts the life-cycle of a hibiscus flower, a metaphor for the fleeting and mutable nature of human life.
