Jay Heikes

Influenced by Arte Povera artists such as Pier Paolo Calzolari and Michelangelo Pistoletto, as well as the situational sculptures of Alighiero e Boetti, Minneapolis-based artist Jay Heikes works in a variety of mediums including drawings, sculptures, videos, and installations. Appropriating imagery and text from pop culture, Heikes creates narratives that address various personal anxieties, patterns and preoccupations. In his work Generational Anxiety (2009) Heikes delves into the impressionistic relationships formed between musicians and artists, meditating on the notion of idolization.

Heikes’ work has been shown at several venues including Aspen Art Museum, Colorado, The Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York. Heikes’ work was included in the Whitney Biennial: Day for Night in 2006 and he had his first solo exhibition at Marianne Boesky Gallery in 2007. Recent solo exhibitions include Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago, Federica Schiavo, Rome, Italy, Gallería Marta Cervera, Madrid, Spain. His work has also been included in group shows Trieste at GRIMM, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Wentrup gallery, Berlin, Germany, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and Xavier Hufkens, Brussels, Belgium, among others.
