Nedko Solakov

Having transcended the relative artistic isolation of post-Soviet Bulgaria, Nedko Solakov tackles serious subjects with a subversive whimsicality. Though the mediums and means he uses are diverse, comprising painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance, his use of humor and sarcasm in narrative-driven works enables him to combine history, fiction, and autobiography seamlessly. Combined with his dark wit and a palpable sense of anxiety, reflecting his experience of the instabilities of Bulgaria, address Solakov’s view of life as an absurd joke, and the fears and questions such a perspective raises.

Solakov has participated in numerous significant exhibitions such as Documenta 12 (2007) and Documenta 13 (2012), and the 2001, 2003, and 2007 Venice Biennales. His work has also been included in exhibitions at institutions such as the Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, the Stedelijk, and the Israel Museum.
