Trisha Brown

Among the best known choreographers of her generation, Trisha Brown has challenged the boundaries of visual and performance art, crossing and mixing the two. A member of the iconic Judson Dance Theater in the 1960s, Brown formed her own dance company in 1970. Collaboration is a major element of Brown's practice, and she has worked with numerous composers, designers, and visual artists, including Simone Forti, Laurie Anderson, and John Cage. Though her work in dance and performance has been widely acclaimed for decades, it is only in recent years that she has been recognized for her visual art as well. Brown's drawings serve as a record and a companion to her choreography: while early works served as sketches attempting to capture live dance in graphic form, this practice has expanded to yield a body of improvisational works that use movement to create lines and forms in two dimensions.
