Zipora Fried

Working across a variety of mediums, ranging from sculpture and installations to painting and photography, Zipora Fried creates works that reward a patient viewer, withholding the obvious in favor of unconventional interpretations and uses of common objects and materials. In her series The Memory of What We Forget (2005), the artist methodically crossed out lines in books, rendering these communicative tools silent. Such obfuscation of meaning is a theme repeated across Fried's portraiture, in which she typically obscures the faces of her subjects.

Fried's works have been exhibited at a number of public and private institutions, including the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis, MoMA PS1, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
