About The Work
This bronze sculpture series, Tulip Mania, is based on the 1st recorded futures market bubble, which occurred during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th Century. People during the Dutch Golden Age invested in tulips only to see the extraordinary prices come crashing down, ruining lives in its wake. Investing so heavily in an ephemeral life form is a fascinating meditation on the accumulation of capital and can be seen as a symbol for the irrationality of the stock market.
Actual tulips were dipped in wax and directly burned out to create the bronze sculptures. Taking on a form of an arch, the linear aspect of the sculptures bring to mind the rise and fall of markets as well the life cycle of a living entity. The titles of each sculpture, Euphoria, Doubt, Denial, and Realism, represent stages economists equate to the rise and fall of a market bubble and can be also equated to the different stages of the grieving process.
