Alejandra Laviada

Alejandra Laviada’s work explores photography's shifting role and relationship to other artistic media, such as painting and sculpture. Her images emerge from the intersections between these different mediums, and aim to question and redefine photography's various roles and boundaries in this context. She also is continuously engaged with the materials and detritus of her urban environment. For each project, Laviada occupies a different site in Mexico City that is in the process of being completely demolished or redeveloped. She photographs her interventions in these spaces, and works only with the objects she finds in each place. The images alter our conception of everyday objects, and reflect a city in transition, struggling to reconcile past and future histories.

In 2010, Laviada won 1st place in Mexico's Photography Biennial, and in 2009 was awarded the prestigious Photo España Descubrimientos Prize for her Photo Sculpture series. Her work has been exhibited widely, including the New York Photo Festival, Art & Commerce's PEEK Festival for Emerging Photographers, and the Hyeres Photography Festival in France. In 2009, Laviada was named one of American Photo and Wallpaper's Emerging Photographers of the Year.
