Fashioned out of bronze and mineral oil, Unknown (well) was the first limited-edition piece created for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland. The reflective bronze cylinder is topped by a layer of mineral oil that acts as a glossy and transparent lens floating above the otherwise opaque sculpture. This work is an example of the artist's interest in juxtaposing disparate materials, experimenting with the affects they have on each other. Read Less

A conceptual artist who works primarily in the media of photography, sculpture, and installation, Claudia Matzko creates curious, intellectually-driven juxtapositions of materials and cultural sensibilities. Her work ranges from living interventions, like the 2002 piece Remember Me, starring a mynah bird taught to sing a line from Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas, to the photography series Voices #1-6, featuring portraits of people expressing ambiguous emotions, overlaid with phantasmal-seeming panels of treated glass.
Featured in the Museum of Modern Art's 1992 show Sense and Sensibility: Women Artists and Minimalism in the Nineties, curated by Lynn Zelevansky, Matzko has also been the recipient of grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Read Less
