Jem Southam Bio
About The Artist
Jem Southam is a British artist concerned with nature's life cycles, and this interest has informed his over twenty-five year career as a landscape photographer. Southam focuses on subtle changes in the British countryside through a meticulous process of recording a singular environment on numerous occasions over an extensive period of time. One of his techniques is to layer and contrast different images in order to bring the evolution of the landscape to the forefront. Southam says that his "overall artistic intentions are to make work that explores how our history, our memory, and our systems of knowledge combine to influence our responses to the places we inhabit, visit, create, and dream of."
Southam is currently Head of Design in the Photography department at the Exeter School of Art and Design. His work has been published in various books, including the prize-nominated The Shape of Time: Rockfalls, Rivermouths and Ponds. Both the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate St. Ives have held solo exhibitions of Southam's work.
